Max was born at Volney, Virginia to the late Neal and Nell Rutherford and also preceded in death by a sister, Linda Rutherford and brother, Jack Rutherford. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. Max was a Supervisor for Virginia House Furniture in Marion, VA, where he retired.

Surviving, his wife, Lila Rutherford of the home; two sons, Stanley and Teresa Rutherford of Marion, VA, and John Glenn Anderson of Golden, Colorado; One grandson, Bradley Dakota Rutherford of Marion; one brother,Ward Rutherford of Chilhowie, VA; one sister, Shirley Lloyd of Lewisville, NC; Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 22, 2012 at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time for the funeral service.

Interment in Baptist Union Cemetery, Flatridge, VA, with Military rites by Grayson County VFW Post 7726.
