Alton D. Yates

Alton Devon Yates, age 67, of Galax, Virginia passed away at his home on Sunday, July 19, 2026. He was born on August 12, 1958, in Jumpertown, Mississippi to Devon and Elizabeth Morgan Yates. Mr. Yates was a wood craftsman and cabinet builder. As a self-employed cabinet builder, he was often commissioned by condominium and hotel contractors for his original furniture designs. He was a very dedicated family man and loved spending time with his family. He was never too busy to accommodate his family even if it included a midnight call from another state seeking a ride back home or even making a trip to Mississippi to acquire a prom dress for a daughter. He was a devoted and loving husband always treating his wife with the upmost respect. He will be remembered as a creature of habit who was somewhat of a philosopher who always tried to think things out! He was an avid fan of 70’s music. His grandchildren brough him a great amount of joy. His family is most thankful for the time they were able to share with him and for the many happy memories that will sustain them throughout their grief experience.

He was preceded in death by his mother and is survived by his wife, Marie Adams of the home; three daughters, Tina Brendle of Low Gap, VA, Lindsay Yates of Nashville, TN, and Kayla Yates of Galax, VA; one son, Josh and Tamera Yates of Mississippi; one brother Terry and Frances Yates of Mississippi; and one sister, Susan and Dale Holden of Louisianna; eleven grandchildren also survive.

A service of Celebration of Life will be conducted at a later date and will be announced at this website as it becomes available.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, VA is serving the Yates family.
