Obituary

Bessie Rose Billings Hash, age 85, formerly of the Rock Creek Community in Independence, VA passed away on the morning of October 29, 2022, at the Grayson Rehab and Nursing Center in Independence.  She was born on July 9, 1937, in Independence.  She was the last surviving child of Charles and Minnie Testerman Billings. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Dean Hash, Sr. and all her brothers and sisters.

Bessie enjoyed being at her home providing for her husband, children and grandchildren.  She delighted in having her grandchildren on the weekends and her family home for every holiday season. She and her husband enjoyed a small farm life raising and showing Quarter Horses. She was a very talented seamstress. She was famous for her chocolate pies, potato salad, and macaroni salad. A pitcher of lemonade was always available in the refrigerator when the grandchildren were visiting. She enjoyed her employment at Robert Shaw Controls Company until her husband's failing health required her to leave work and care for him which she did with a joyful spirit for several years.  She attended church at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with her brother, Dean "Sam" Billings, in Independence, VA. Her granddaughter recalled a favorite memory in reflecting on how a visit would end at MomMom's house.  All visitors were always walked to the car and was given a sincere wave of goodbye until the last traces of the car could be seen rounding the bend in the road.

Survivors include a son, Paul Dean Hash, Jr. of Dublin, VA; daughter, Patsy and Charlie Hall of Catawba, VA; grandchildren, Caregiver - Brandi Harris of Independence, Angela R Smith of Galax, Joe Paul Hash of Sparta, Jessica Anders of Independence, Devin Hash of Mouth of Wilson, and Ryan Hash of Galax; Special Friend - Katie Boyd of Floyd, several great grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 2:00 PM at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel in Independence.  The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM prior to the funeral.  Officiating will be Rev. Darrin Brannock.  Burial will follow in the Rock Creek Cemetery.

Memorial contribution may be made to the Independence Rescue.  Reins-Sturdivant is serving the Hash family.
