Betty Jane Cornett Thornton, age 95, of Fries, Virginia passed away on Monday, May 1, 2023, at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. She was born in Grayson County Virginia on March 14, 1928, to Dewey and Sessie Price Cornett.

She will be remembered as a very loving and kind person who found great joy in helping other people. She was always willing and happy to help provide for others. She was a generous person who loved to share with her neighbors and friends. She loved cooking Sunday dinners and taking food to her neighbors. She lived a blessed life. Even at the age of 95, with the help of her devoted daughter, she was able to live independently in her own home until the very end. She enjoyed a "trip into town" as often as possible and delighted in working in her flowers. She was known as a person who was kind to cats. Many strays found food and shelter because of her generous nature. Her life was greatly enriched by her two feline companions, Lucy and Misty.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lewis Henry Thornton, and her son in law, Roger Williams.

Mrs. Thornton is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Williams of Fries, VA; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at 2:00 PM at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Independence, VA with Rev. Ben Haga and speaker, Butch Pickett officiating.
