Billy Wayne Cornett, age, 66, of Independence, VA passed away at his home on Monday morning, January 20, 2025.  He was born in Independence on July 11, 1958, to Lawrence Harvey and Mattie Marie Tilley Cornett.

Billy lived a life of service to others.  He joined the US Marine Corps and was given a medical discharge. He later joined the maintenance department of the Town of Independence where his talents and abilities were soon recognized.  He was sent for additional training and operated the Water Treatment Plant for several years.  He was a favorite among the town employees and citizens alike.  He will be remembered for his ability to attack and complete any job that was assigned to him.

He is survived by two sisters, Rose Marie Cornett of Galax, VA and Sherry Clyburn of Independence, VA; one stepson, Charles and Kiri McHaffey of Galax, VA; two step grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Tilley and one sister, Debbie White.

Memorial services will be conducted Monday evening, Jan. 27, 2025, at 6:00 PM at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Matthew Adams officiating.  The family will receive friends from 5:00-6:00 prior to the funeral at the funeral home.
