Calvin Raymond
Byrd
January 24, 1965 — May 14, 2025
With great sadness that the family of Calvin Raymond Byrd, age 60, of Independence, VA announces his passing on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at the Grayson Rehab and Nursing Center in Independence. Raymond was born in Sparta, NC on January 24, 1965, to Rev. Clarence Wesley and Nillie June Hash Byrd. Raymond was a much-loved and well-known citizen of the Independence community. He will be remembered for a smile that could light up any room and for a unconditional love that was extended to everybody that he met. Proverbs 18:24 states "A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly." Raymond was famous for his kind and loving nature. Raymond grew up attending church as he always traveled with his father on preaching engagements. He was fortunate to have received support and devotion from his family for three generations, throughout his life. He brought much love and joy to his family. He was especially devoted to his nieces and nephews, and they delighted in responding to Raymond's needs. He especially enjoyed his Thursday excursions to Walmart with his extended in-law, Curt Johnson. He loved his home church of Chestnut Hill Baptist Church. Raymond was a devoted and loyal supporter of Dr. Pepper and Slim Jim.
He is survived by his sister, Marie and Junior Billings of Independence; niece and special caregiver, Jessica Billings of Independence; nephew, Eric and Rhonda Billings of Independence; great nieces, Lydia Skoski and Aliviah Billings of Independence; great nephews, Jostyn Billings and Alec Skoski; special "uncle," Curt Johnson; and special friend, Charlie Ward; and a host of aunts, uncles, extended family, cousins, church family, and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Chestnut Hill Baptist Church with Pastor Allen Testerman, Rev. Randy Lovelace, Jimmy McKnight and David VanHoy officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
