Carol Jean
Cochran Phillips
November 2, 1951 — September 28, 2025
Carol Jean Cochran Phillips, age 73, of Independence, VA passed away at her home on Sunday, September 28, 2025. Mrs. Phillips was born on November 2, 1951, in Beckley, West Virginia to George and Audrey Birchfield Cochran. She will be remembered as a dedicated wife, loving mother and a much beloved "Nana" to a host of grandchildren. True to her mountain heritage, she was a strong and independent woman who took great joy in providing for her family and her community. The Phillips household was often the "community house" where extended family and community friends would congregate. The house was always large enough to offer a haven for anybody who sought refuge there. She offered the comforts of her home to an international traveler, and friends of her children and grandchildren as well. She lived her life in dedication to the service of others. Her generosity and compassion were extended to many throughout the years of her life. Among her greatest attributes was her constant and unwavering concern for her children and grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by one daughter, Jo Ann and Sterling Goodson of Independence, VA; two sons, Kenneth and Brittany Phillips of Hinton, West Virginia and Jerry D. "J.D." Phillips II of Independence, VA; one brother, Ronnie and Mary Cochran of Max Meadows, Virginia; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; very special friends, Debbie Bass, Mary Shaw, Robin Quesenberry, Cindy Combs, and Sherry Dowell also survive. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Life Center of Galax, VA for the support they have given during the past few months.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, October 4, at 12:00 noon at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chuck Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
