Carolyn Jane
Thornton Williams
January 7, 1949 — February 13, 2026
Carolyn Jane Thornton Williams, age 77, of Fries, VA passed away on Friday, Feb.13, 2026, at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in Christiansburg, Virginia. Mrs. Williams was born on January 7, 1949, in Grayson County to Henry and Betty Cornett Thornton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Bayne "Pete" Williams. Following her high school graduation, she assumed a position as a supply clerk at Mt. Vernon Fries Cotton Mill and later at B. C. Vaughan. Carolyn was a life-long resident of the Fries area and was a familiar face to her community. She found great joy in providing for her neighbors and often very quietly helped in a financial way. She will be remembered for caring for her lawn and her beautifully manicured flower gardens which was a source of pride for her. Once her health began to fail, she continued working in her flower gardens from the seat of her golf cart accompanied by her faithful fur baby, "Little Bit." She enjoyed trips into town which often included a stop at Hardees, especially when she was caring from her mother. Much to the surprise of many, Carolyn was a devoted sports fan, especially Nascar and football. She was well versed in both sports and could comfortably discuss recent events with the most seasoned enthusiast. Perhaps Carolyn will be best remembered for her love and devotion to animals. Many homeless strays found a gentle hand which offered a welcomed meal at her doorstep. While her devotion was often extended to dogs, the way-worn cat received the same love, care, and welcome. It is most fitting that the family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Twin County Humane Society PO BOX 125 Hillsville, VA 24343.
Carolyn is survived by a host of friends including Charles and Carolyn Pearce, Vina Taylor, Ann Hawkes, Robbie Collins, Timmy and Gina Vaughan, Chase and Chasity Vaughan, Clara Campbell, Opal Clyburn, and Earl Pierce. She is also survived by her beloved canine fur babies, "Little Bit" and "Molly," and her feline fur baby, "Misty."
With some reluctance, Carolyn finally agreed to graveside services which will be conducted on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, at the Mr. Hope Cemetery in Fries, VA. Officiating will be her devoted friend, Vina Taylor. There will be no formal visitation, and friends are asked to gather at the graveside at 1:00 PM.
Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, VA is serving the family.
