Remembering a Cherished Life

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Dr. Charles Curtis Quarles, who left us on October 31, 2025, at the age of 75. Dr. Quarles departed peacefully at his home in Forest City, North Carolina. leaving behind a legacy of kindness, love, and cherished memories.

Born on February 22, 1950, in Charleston, West Virginia. Dr. Quarles was preceded in death by his loving father and mother Curtis Quarles, Jr. and Emma Lee Quarles of Charleston, West Virginia. He was also preceded by his loving partner and soulmate, Derek Halsey, of Independence, Virginia.

Dr. Quarles attended Stonewall Jackson High School, Charleston, West Virginia and received his BA and DDS at West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia. He served as an instructor in Restorative Dentistry at West Virginia University School of Dentistry prior to moving to Forest City, North Carolina.  Dr. Quarles made his home in Forest City and opened a dental practice where he served his patients from 1975 until his retirement in 2019.

Throughout his life, Dr. Quarles touched the lives of many with his generosity of spirit and genuine compassion. His gentle sense of humor and thoughtful guidance created lasting bonds within his aviation community. Whether mentoring young collectors or sharing stories with friends, he was always ready to offer a listening ear and wise counsel. Dr. Quarles was devoted to his family of friends who will forever treasure the moments they shared together. He was known for his kindness to others and his unwavering loyalty, warmth, and dedication to those he loved. He will be deeply missed by all who were privileged to know him.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Quarles had a passion for aviation and collecting rare artifacts, which brought joy and inspiration to many. He was a steadfast member of several historical societies and aviation organizations, always eager to share his knowledge and enthusiasm. His commitment to community service and education extended far beyond his dental practice, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Among these are close friends Don and Betty Elmore, Jason and Elizabeth Halsey Jones, Lanny Walker and Annette Jones, Steve and Sue Spatz, Shelia Wilson, James Furr, Reuben Martinez and Mary Faubert, Ronnie Ferrell, Steve Vaynes. Leah Schram, Tracey Faucette and many others are too numerous to mention.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at 2:00 pm at the Gold Hill Cemetery located in Independence, Virginia.

A Celebration of Life for Dr. Quarles will be scheduled at a later date to honor and celebrate his legacy and life's work as one of the largest curators of aviation history and memorabilia.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to T2T (Tunnel to Towers) in Dr. Quarles honor.

Charles Curtis Quarles' light will continue to shine in the hearts of those who knew him.
