Charles Montgomery Shumate, age 91, of Troutdale, Virginia died on May 21, 2022, at the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. Mr. Shumate was born on September 20, 1930, in Rugby, Virginia to Brack M. and Flossie Mae Riddle Shumate. He served in the United States Army from 1952-1954. He retired after serving several years as a Correctional Lieutenant in the Virginia Department of Corrections. He was a member of the St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Damascus, VA. He enjoyed designing and handcrafting knives and loved being outdoors fishing and hunting. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Orpha Price Shumate; daughter, Peggy Ashley; brothers, Carson Shumate, Ward Shumate, Mack Shumate; and sister, Madge Parsons.
Mr. Shumate is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nell N. Shumate of the home; five sons, Daniel and Jennifer Shumate of Mt. City, TN, Steve and Cindy Shumate of TN, Edward Shumate of Troutdale, VA, Dale and Sandy Shumate of Bristol, VA, and Jarrad and Samara Shumate of Abingdon, VA; two daughters, Sandra and Dennis Billings of Whitetop, VA and Melissa and Ronnie Smith of Pilot Mountain, NC; grandchildren, Dakota, Hannah, Stetson, Daniel, Lindsay, Quinlan and Patricia, Seth, Chelsa, Trevan, Tara, Stephanie, Heather Dustin, Zachary, and Beau; great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Isabella and Rommie, Trystan, Cayden, and Leighton: great-great granddaughter Ellie Rose, two sisters-in-law, Patsy Wilson of Indiana and Elsie Noblett of Pilot Mountain, NC; one brother-in-law, Robert and Carol Noblett of Independence, VA; special caregivers, Kelly Haga, Kathy Hamm, and Jill Arnold.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at 1:00 PM at the St. Matthew Lutheran Church with Rev. Harvey Atkinson, Rev. Will Robertson, and Rev. Tommy Addison officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00-1:00 at the church prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow in the Laurel Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by Grayson VFW Post #7726.
