Rev. Clarence Wesley Byrd, age, 81, of Independence, Virginia died in Independence on Feb. 4, 2022, in Independence.  Rev. Byrd was born on November 16, 1940, in the Baywood Community of Grayson County to Clarence Hix and Lula Crotts Byrd.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Nillie June Byrd and a brother, Ray Byrd.

Rev. Byrd will be remembered for his love of his family and his church and his devotion to serving as a minister of the gospel. He enjoyed life and loved to make people laugh.  His life exemplifies the scripture, "A merry heart doth good as a medicine" Proverbs 17:22.

Public memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Tom Burcham and Rev. Derek Cowan officiating.  Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery following the service.

Rev. Byrd is survived by one son, Raymond Byrd of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Junior Billings of Independence, Virginia; one grandson, Eric (Rhonda) Billings of Independence; one very special granddaughter and caregiver, Jessica Billings of Independence; brother and sister-in-law, Clifford and Margie Byrd of High Point, NC; two brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law; four great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
