Clifton Reed Edwards, age 90, of Sparta, NC passed away at his home on Friday, February 2, 2024. He was born on March 4, 1933, in Alleghany County, North Carolina to Bert and Hattie Crouse Edwards. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant sisters and three brothers, Carlie Edwards, Clive Edwards, and Roy Edwards. Clifton served his country during the Korean Conflict in the US Army where he was honorably discharged following his service. He was a dedicated employee of Hanes of Sparta where he served in many capacities. He will be remembered as a dedicated husband and loving father who found great joy in providing for his family. He was a man of faith who served as a deacon for many years at the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. He loved attending church and continued to attend as long as his health allowed. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and tending his vegetable gardens and any other activity that allowed him to be outdoors! He was especially fond of gospel and bluegrass music. Mr. Edwards lived a life that displayed a dedicated devotion to his God, his country, and his family. His passing has left a void that will be felt in the hearts of all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Thelma Sadler Edwards of the home; one daughter, Sandra and Wayne Rash of Elkin, NC; one brother, Coy and Dorothy Edwards of Sparta, NC; one special niece, Pat Irwin of Sparta; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, at 3:00 PM at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kevin Hopson and Rev. Eddie Foster officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Sparta Cemetery in Sparta, NC with military rites conducted by the US Army and the Sparta VFW Post #7034.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Cassie Allen and Darlene Smith for the wonderful support they have offered as caregivers.
