Mr. Dale Tanner Smith, age 90, of the Grassy Creek Community died on July 30, 2022, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehab Center in Independence, Virginia. Mr. Smith was born on March 25, 1932, in Mouth of Wilson to Howard E. and Hattie Halsey Smith. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1952-1954. He was a farmer and revered in his family as "the mountain man." He was never one to get in a hurry and once remarked to his brothers "I like to stop and smell the roses" when they were trying to speed him up with a project. He never owned a car nor had a driver's license. He walked everywhere he went and was often not interested in riding even when he was offered a ride.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by nine of his siblings. He is survived by four brothers, Vern and Shirley Smith of Mouth of Wilson, VA, Ford Smith of Independence, VA, Joe and Joyce Smith of Fries, VA, and Tommy and Wanda Smith of Independence, VA; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Graveside services will be conducted on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at 1:00 PM at the Potato Creek Cemetery by the Rev. Bob Cheeks. Military honors will be conducted by Grayson County VFW Post #7726. The family will receive friends on Tuesday morning from 11:30-12:30 at Reins- Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, VA.
