David Smith
Hamm
November 15, 1961 — June 9, 2024
David Smith Hamm, age 62 of Independence, Virginia entered into rest on June 9, 2024, at Twin County Hospital after a short battle with a rare form of cancer. Dave was born on November 15, 1961, to Leonard Smith Hamm Jr. and the late Deloris Hilda Bosley in Edgewood, Maryland.
Dave was a man who loved simple things like a huge garden, playing horseshoes with his friends, and having his family all in one room. For 44 years, he worked hard at the local sawmill, in which he met, managed, and mentored many men that became respected and valued friends. His hard work was also evidence of his commitment to take care of his family and people in need, always making sure everyone had food and firewood in their homes. He was straightforward, honest, stuck up for the little guy, and was the kind of person you could trust to always keep his word. If you ever met him at the horseshoe pit, you would see all these traits come to light in the best ways—sometimes taking on a beginner partner, helping mentor and teach them in the game, while also taking no less than their best and expecting to win so he could bring that money back home to help his daughter pay for college. To all that knew him, he will be missed for his mission to always help others be better and have one heck of a time along the way.
Dave is survived by his wife Kimberly Hamm, his three sons David, Daniel, and Dakota Hamm, his daughter, Amie Hamm, his stepchildren Zack, Aaren, and Reece, many grandchildren, his father and stepmother Leonard Hamm and Marie Hamm, his brother Jack Hamm, sister Tina Keavy, many great friends, his best furry friend Sassy II, crazy cat-Piper, and a grand-turtle, Zoomer.
A memorial service to honor Dave's life will be held on June 13th at 2pm at Living By Faith Baptist Church with Pastor Derek Cowan officiating. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the David Hamm family c/o Kim Hamm 873 Wilson Highway, Independence, VA 24348.
