Dean Sheets

Dean Sheets, age 68, the second born son of Plummer Council and Wilma Kilby Sheets, passed away unexpectantly following a tragic tree cutting accident on the morning of August 16, 2026, in the Rugby Community of Mouth of Wilson, VA. While Dean made his home in the Troutdale Community of Grayson County, Virginia, he was reared in the Upper Grassy Creek Community. Dean was a much loved and well-respected resident of both communities as well as in the surrounding areas. Born on September 13, 1957, in Ashe County just a few feet from the NC/VA line, Dean spent his formative years between the two states. He developed a strong work ethic as a young man which he maintained throughout his life. Dean was an exceptionally talented individual excelling in many varying disciplines ranging from automotive repair to carpentry skills and everything in between. Dean was admired throughout the area as he was always able and willing to put his various talents to use to help his family, friends, and neighbors alike. His service to his fellowman and his willingness to always offer a helping hand made him a favorite among many and will be his enduring legacy. In recent years he was a skilled timberman who endured all types of weather serving the timber industry. In his leisure hours he could often be found involved in a motor rebuild, vehicle or tractor restoration, plumbing or wiring project. Amid all of this he was never too busy pay a friendly visit, offer a kind word, share a smile or a joke with anyone, complete strangers included. Dean was always armed with a quick wit that was sure to bring a smile. His favorite topic of conversation was most often about his son or his grandson. He was a proud dad and grandfather and cherished his time spent with his boys. He was a devoted uncle who took an interest in the lives of his nieces and nephews. He was very devoted to the love of his life, Traci, “his better half,” as he called her. These people along with his sister and brothers and a host of dedicated friends, validated his life and gave him purpose. It is not likely that another Dean Sheets will pass our way again. He will be remembered with smiles and thanksgiving by those of us who were fortunate enough to have known him. In recent months, he had a visit with his undertaker and outlined his wishes for his final arrangements which his family have chosen to honor. At his request, all services will be private, and he will be laid to rest beside his father at the Fairwood Cemetery in the Troutdale Community. If one wishes to remember Dean and celebrate his life, do it with a kind deed or gesture for somebody in need; therefore, his legacy of service will continue.

He is survived by his loving son, Billy Dean Weylin Sheets and Courtney Underwood of Chilhowie, Virginia; his “better half,” Traci Nichols of the home; two grandchildren, Bradley Martin and Weylin Dean Sheets; one sister, Jackie Sheets of Troutdale, VA; two brothers, Ronnie Sheets and Judy Watson of Ashe County and David and Drema Sheets of Troutdale, VA. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles also survive.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, VA is serving the Sheets family.
