Dorothy Phipps Chase of Independence, Virginia passed away on December 25, 2020.

She was preceded in death by her parents G. Dewey and Elsie R. Phipps; brother Harvey Lewis Phipps; and sister Carole Phipps Wade.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years James E. Chase; brothers Jimmey Norman Phipps (LTC USAF-RET) (Bonnie) of Colorado Springs, CO; George D. Phipps,  Jr. (Patricia) of Independence, Virginia; sister-in-law, Pauline R. Phipps of High Point, NC; brother-in-law Benjamin T. Wade of Roanoke, VA; children Mark Chase (Janet) and Ann Bergen (John); grandchildren, Adam Woods and Molly Bergen.

Dorothy attended Independence High School and earned a Bachelor's degree from Radford College and a Master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.  Dorothy and Jim raised their children in Bon Air, Virginia.  She was an elementary art teacher for Chesterfield County Public Schools.  After retiring, she returned to her childhood home in Grayson County.

As a longtime member of the United Methodist Women, she attended conferences at Lake Junaluska which was a highlight of her church activities.

Dorothy enjoyed learning about different cultures and traveled to China and Russia as a part of People to People International teacher's exchange program.  She admired the art of Georgia O'Keefe and had a special love for Shaker traditions and their furniture.  She enjoyed painting, writing poetry, reading and learning.

A graveside service for the immediate family will be held at the Isaiah Phipps Family Cemetery in Bridle Creek on Saturday, January 2, 2021.
