Edgar Hampton DeHart Sr, 79, of Galax, VA went to be with his Lord and savior Jesus Christ on May 20, 2021.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Carolyn Dudley DeHart; Son Edgar "Chip" Hampton DeHart Jr & wife Tabitha; Daughter Stephanie DeHart Carico; Grandson Charles Robert DeHart & wife Rose Angela; Granddaughter Heather Marie Sexton; Nephew Charles Scott DeHart; Also his Sister Gretta Jean Purdue & husband Robert; Brother Charles Randolph DeHart & wife Brenda; many friends in both Virginia and Texas also survive him.

Edgar received his Associate Degree in Education at Ferrum Jr College in Franklin County, Virginia. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute for his Bachelor of Education and Master of Science in Agriculture and Horticulture.  He retired from Grayson County School System after serving 8 years as Principal of Independence & Grayson County High School, then 2 years as Director of Grayson County Vocational School.

Edgar was a member and Deacon of Chestnut Hill Baptist Church in Independence, VA.  His Family will be forever grateful to his church family whom he loved & cherished.  Also the many of his former students that helped care for him through his battle with lymphoma here in Galax, Sparta and Winston-Salem.

His family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chestnut Hill Baptist Church, or to St Jude Children's Hospital, or to the charity of your choice.  He will be greatly missed by all those who loved and respected him.

Reins Sturdivant is providing service to the family.

A memorial service will be conducted by Rev Tim Crockett and Rev Tom Burcham on Sunday May 30 at Chestnut Hill Baptist Church in Independence, VA at 4:00pm.  The family will be at the church an hour preceding the service.
