Elmo Phipps Johnson, age 63, of the Elk Creek Community passed away at his home on April 30, 2026.  He was born on June 22, 1963, in Grayson County to Elmo and Kanetta Phipps Johnson.  He graduated from Independence High School in 1981 where he was a member of the Independence High School Band.  Throughout his high school career, he was a celebrated drummer in the band and was elected as most talented senior superlative.   During his senior year, he composed the marching cadence used for the band parade performances.   He was listed among the Who's Who in the 1981 High School Students. He worked in a variety of factories assembling electrical components and also worked as a D.J. for local events.  He was a member of Crossroads United Methodist Church in Elk Creek.  Elmo loved to laugh and tell a joke.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his son, Isaiah McMillan, two sisters, Linda During and Teresa Johnson.

He is survived by two daughters, Mara Johnson of Albuquerque, NM and Jade Jarvis of Wytheville, VA; one sister, Nancy Johnson of Wytheville, VA; two grandchildren, Serenity and Aurora.

Memorial services will be conducted on June 5, at 2:00 PM at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home.  Inurnment will follow in the Johnson Cemetery in Elk Creek.
