Evelyn Cassell Hughes, age 83, of Independence, VA, died peacefully Thursday Morning August 12, 2021.  She was born in the Long's Gap community of Independence on January 8th 1938 to Charles Gleaves Cassell and Edith Delp Cassell.  She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Charles Smith Cassell, and son Richard L. Hughes Jr, both of Independence.

She was a graduate of Grayson County High School and was retired from the Internal Revenue Service in Atlanta, Georgia where she raised a family until her retirement after 30 years of service. Evelyn enjoyed working and continued working well into her retirement as Office Manager for Appalachian Title & Settlement for 17 years.  During her retirement, she also served as a member of the Independence Town Council. She was a dedicated wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Hughes is survived by her husband Richard L. Hughes Sr; daughter Pam (& Kelly) Horne of Dublin GA; Three Grandchildren Madison Horne and Sarah Evans of Dublin, GA and Kaden Hughes of Independence, VA; great-granddaughter Evelyn Jane Evans of Dublin, GA; sisters Nancy (& Curtis) Harrington, and Nell (& Tommy) Morton, sister-in-law Precious Cassell all of Independence.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside service for Mrs. Hughes will be August 14, 2021 at 11:00am at the Independence Cemetery.  Service will be officiated by Pastor Terri Johnson Gregory. Pall Bearers include nephews Brant Cassell, Jason Cassell, Dennis Harrington, Chris Morton, Stephen Osborne, and Ronnie Longworth.
