Fred Hall,
Jr.
January 21, 1943 — August 26, 2024
Fred Hall Jr., 81 passed away peacefully Monday, August 26, 2024, surrounded by his children at his home in Independence, Virginia. Freddie was born January 21, 1943, in Baltimore County, Maryland to Alta Waddell Hall and Fred Hall Sr. The family returned to their native Grayson County to live on the family farm shortly thereafter. Fred was a 1961 graduate of Independence High School and following high school served in the Air Force as a Fireman at Plattsburg Air Force Base.
A lifelong resident of Independence, Freddie ran a successful business in the 1970's and 80's operating as Hall's Tire Service. If you grew up in Independence in the 70's you likely had a set of Freddie Hall's tires on your car at some point. Fred enjoyed a number of interests and occupations throughout his life including Dairy Farmer, Tire Man, Antique Buyer and Shop Owner, and Rural Mail Delivery Postman for the USPS.
Fred led a life dedicated to making positive contributions to his community. An active member of First United Methodist Church and Flat Rock United Methodist Church, he was a community outreach leader in the local missions of both churches. He was also a member of the Independence Jaycees. For over 18 years, Fred was the driving force behind Bid for a Cure, a local research fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis raising over $750,000. His unmatched energy and dedication made the annual signature event a success. Freddie was perhaps most well-known for his BBQ chicken fundraisers and his chicken cooking crews who raised money for community churches, civic organizations, and individuals in need. Summer Saturday mornings in Independence often included BBQ chicken halves for sale on the town lot at the corner of Main Street.
Fred is preceded in death by his wife Evelyn McKnight Hall and is survived by 3 children, Jennifer Hall Hankins (Dave), Susan Hall Haga (Kelly), and Mary Ann Hall Halsey (Roger). Seven grandchildren survive, Robert Tate Haga, Jackson Ryan Haga, Sophia Rose Haga, Claire Elizabeth Hankins, Julia Ann Hankins, Tyler Macall Gillock, and William "Liam" Gene Gillock and special caregiver Shelly Clampett.
Memorial services will be conducted on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Independence, VA. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until the hour of service. The Rev. Terri Gregory will officiate.
