Gary Wayne Benfield, age 69, of Independence, VA passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehab Center in Independence.  He was born in Hickory, North Carolina on December 17, 1953, to Wayne Edward and Lois Mae Willis Benfield who preceded him in death.  He was a self-employed carpenter.  Gary loved the outdoors.  He was hunter and fisherman and loved riding his four by four.  He had a special affinity for the river and especially enjoyed his time near the water.  He was a talented carpenter and was well versed in all aspects of construction.  He was also a mason having won a state masonry tournament during his high school career.  While he was dedicated to all as aspects of construction, he drew the line at painting!  He did not like to paint! He had a great love for animals! He is survived by his favorite dogs, Utah and Gabby and his cats, BoBo, Mattie Mae, Roscoe, Rhudy, and L.B.  His son, Jason, described his father as "a really good dad who went above and beyond."

Gary is survived by Gina VanHoy of the home, his son, Jason and Leia Benfield of Sparta, NC: brother, Chris and Janet Benfield of Conover, NC; five grandchildren; two nephews, Joshua and Ashley Benfield of Vale, NC and Jared and Amber Benfield of Conover, NC; friends, Dick Henderson and David Parsons also survive.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 23, at 1:00 PM at the Reins- Sturdivant Funeral Home.  There will be no funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to the Independence Rescue Squad PO BOX 607 Independence, VA 24348.
