Gearl Dean Cornett, age, 84 of Troutdale, VA, the Flatridge Community, passed away on Friday, Feb. 17, 2023, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA.  Gearl Dean was born on February 22, 1938, in the Grant Community of Grayson County to Hilmore Jackson and Belvia Jane Spencer Cornett.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Gearl Dean was a life-long farmer.  In addition to farming, he was employed by the Grayson County School System for 36 years as a bus driver and was also a truck driver for the Stone Trucking Company. He used his skills as a self-employed carpenter to help his neighbors and friends.  He was a member of the Baptist Union Church.  He was a veteran of the United States Army.  His military service will be recognized at the graveside service which will include Military Honors performed by the Grayson County V.F.W. Post #7726 and the United States Army.

Gearl Dean is survived by his wife of 64 years, Georgia Ruth Cornett of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Eddie Perkins of Troutdale, VA; one son David Cornett of Troutdale; three grandchildren, Stacey and Scott Osborne of West Jefferson, NC, Ashley and Brandon Brewer of Troutdale, and Michael and India Cornett of Troutdale; five great grandchildren, Tyler, Madison, Isaac, Eli and Noah.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at 11:00 AM the Baptist Union Church with Pastor, Rev. Roger Boyer and Rev. Doug Halsey officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 AM at the church prior to the service.  Burial will follow in the Central Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Troutdale Rescue Squad or the Troutdale Fire Department 291 Ripshin Road Troutdale, VA 24378.
