Gena Delp
Cox
June 22, 1943 — September 19, 2022
Gena Delp Cox, age 79, went to her heavenly home on September 19 th , 2022 after a long illness. Gena was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and faithful servant of Jesus Christ. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Gena was born on June 22, 1943 and raised in Grayson county, Virginia, where she loved the mountains and country living. She married George Cox of Mouth of Wilson, VA in 1962 at the age of 18 and moved to the Potato Creek community where they raised cattle and tobacco together on their farm for 48 years. Gena and George had three daughters and enjoyed their life together on the farm. Many hours of hard work were part of each day, but they valued time together and with their children. There were many days of fun and laughter at family picnics, cookouts, sporting events, or just working on the farm together. Gena encouraged her daughters to follow their dreams and was always there to listen to their problems. She loved with all her heart and served her family well.
Gena was an active member at Potato Creek Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, treasurer, and caretaker of the church property. She was involved in most all activities at the church. She was known in the community as someone who was always eager to help others often taking food to those who were sick or had a death in the family. Gena was a great cook and was especially known for the best apple pie!
Gena is preceded in death by her husband, George, parents, Kyle and Imogene Delp of Independence, VA, and brothers, Tommy and Dennis Delp, both of Independence, VA. Gena is survived by her daughter, Debbie Sturgill and spouse, Randy, of Laurel Springs, NC, daughter, Polly Owen and spouse, Steve, of Kingsport, TN, and daughter, Amy Close of Owasso, OK. She is also survived by her brother, Bobby Delp of Independence, VA, grandchildren Brittany Osborne, Bridgette Sturgill, David Owen, Daniel Owen, Sarah Owen, Dalton Close, and Dylan Close, and great grandchildren, Grayson Osborne and Madison Spurlock, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Her family and friends will dearly miss her, but we are comforted she is in heaven with the Lord. A Celebration of Life will be held at Potato Creek Church, 2726 Potato Creek Rd., Mouth of Wilson, VA at 2 pm on Sunday, September 25 th . Bryan Buchanan will be officiating with Garrison and Cheryl Buchanan singing her favorite hymns. Interment will be at the Potato Creek Church Cemetery after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Potato Creek Church and sent to James Halsey at P.O. Box 183, Ennice, NC 28623.
Special thanks to all our family, friends, and caregivers at The Blake at Kingsport and Lifecare Center at Gray, particularly, Cindy, Carolyn, Christina, and Sarah, who were so kind to her and to our family during her illness.
