Geneva Elizabeth Byrd Halsey, 87, of Independence, VA passed away at Lewis Gale Montgomery Hospital in Blacksburg, VA on Oct. 23, 2023.  She was born on September 9, 1936, in Independence, VA to Hurley and Lollie Cole Byrd.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bryan Halsey, her infant daughter, Linda Gail Halsey, sister, Maxine Byrd, and her three brothers, Reavis, Raymond and Talmadge S. Byrd.   Mrs. Halsey lived a simple life and quietly moved about her daily routine always displaying honesty and dignity in all her actions. She found great joy in providing and caring for her family.  She was no stranger to hard work and always enjoyed a large and bountiful garden in which she took great pride in preserving and canning.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara S. and David Donald Crockett of Elkton, MD; two sons, James B. and Jeanne Halsey of Independence, VA and Raymond Scott Byrd of Fries, VA; six grandchildren, Kenneth Adam Byrd, Jennifer Lynn Byrd Edwards, James Scott Byrd, Jason Bryan Halsey, Amanda Lynn Crockett McGreevy and Courtney Elizabeth Crockett Langlois; eleven great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Juanita Halsey Phipps; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 11:00 AM the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jimmy McKnight officiating.  The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 prior to the service.  Private burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.  While flowers are appreciated, memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Grove Cemetery c/o Ronald Anders PO BOX 413 Independence, VA 24348.  The family respectfully request no food.
