Geneva Warren Walters, age 84, of Independence, ended her Earthly journey and entered her heavenly home on November 16, 2024, at Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Virginia. She was born to Dillon and Vella Warren on December 14, 1939.

Geneva was the epitome of strength and determination. During her nearly forty years of service at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, she used her knowledge of traditions and empathy for the grieving to support families during their darkest hour. Whether handing out folders at the door or working diligently behind her desk, Geneva handled her role at the funeral home with the utmost respect and never ceased in her desire to uplift those in need. She and Dan spent countless hours and sleepless nights ensuring the people of Grayson County were comforted during their time of bereavement.

Given her love of Christ and his teachings, Geneva was also a faithful Pine Branch Baptist Church member. The echo of old hymns was often heard as Geneva carried about the day's business, and the importance of maintaining the ties of her small mountain church was evident in the meticulous care she provided for the sanctuary. Geneva served as the treasurer for Pine Branch Cemetery for decades until her health no longer allowed her to do so. She took pride in decorating the church for each Christmas season and dutifully cared for the upkeep of the cemetery. Her strong roots in the Appalachian Mountains seared the importance of yearly cemetery decorations into her heart, and she treated this unique regional tradition as a vital way to honor those long since passed.

Of the things she held most dear, none was more important to Geneva than her family. She took tremendous pride in her home and covered all those who entered under her wing of unwavering care. Around her table, the warmth of her cooking and the spirit with which she prepared it fed far more than the stomach. The love found in that kitchen filled the soul with the nourishment only a wife, mother, and grandmother could provide. As a wife, Geneva worked tirelessly to support and care for Dan as they navigated the fluctuating seasons of life. As a mother, she demonstrated the strength and fortitude required to raise children in the light of God's love. As a grandmother, Geneva poured her heart into assuring her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were wrapped in the blanket of her love. Fashion shows, shopping trips, week-long sleepovers, excursions to Washington D.C., lunches by candlelight, rambunctious museum visits, ice cream feasts, and Christmas dinners filled with her legendary chicken pie and macaroni and cheese are only a thimble full of the memories that will sustain her family during the darkest of days. Geneva enveloped her loved ones with her compassion, generosity, and sharp wit. Her family finds tremendous peace knowing her mind is whole and her heart is full as she approaches Heaven's golden shores.

Mrs. Walters is survived by her two daughters: Robin Hackler and husband Dennis; Donna Anders and husband Ronald, all of Independence; two stepchildren: Kathy O'Connor and husband Dan of Knoxville, Tennessee; Harold Walters and wife Sharon of Independence, Virginia; four grandchildren: Kim Hackler, Jeremy Walters and wife Danyelle, Emily McMahan and husband Chris, and Marcie Anders; four great-grandchildren: Hayden, Carly, Natalie, and Mason; and one step great-grandson Jonah; Brothers Richard Warren and wife Dorothy of Max Meadows, Virginia, and Scott Warren and wife Janie of Kingsport, Tennessee.  Several nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews also survive. Geneva was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Dan Walters; parents Dillon and Vella Warren; and Don M. Cox (first husband).

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00 p.m. with David VanHoy officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow in the Pine Branch Cemetery in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Pine Branch Cemetery in care of Barbara Young, 3649 Flat Ridge Road, Troutdale, Virginia 24378. The family also requests that no food be brought to the home.
