Georgia Esther Fortner Woods, age 94, of Independence, VA passed away at the Grayson Nursing and Rehab Center in Independence on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.  She was born on April 5, 1931, in Ceres, VA to Levator Samuel and Mary Ellen Bevil Fortner.  Mrs. Woods was a loving wife, dedicated mother, and proud grandmother of her only grandson, Devin, who was the light of her world.  Georgia will be remembered as one who always put others, especially her family, before herself.  She lived a creed of simplicity and humility.  Her love of flowers was annually displayed in her flower gardens, a tradition continued by her daughter, as Georgia's health failed.  She was a kind neighbor who was loved by all.  Her presence will be missed by her family and her community.

She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie and Richard Barker and Brenda and Roger Brown both of Independence, VA; grandson, Devin and Ashley Phipps of Winston Salem, NC; great-granddaughter, Lillian Phipps of Winston-Salem, NC; brother-in-law, Bob Young of Martinsburg, WV; aunt, Louise Bevil of Ceres, VA; special friend, Nancy Wright of Independence, VA; several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harding Woods; daughter, Betty Woods; two sons, Larry Woods and Ronnie Woods; three sisters, Louise Young, Elva Young, and Diane Fortner; and one brother, Junior Fortner.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 2:00 at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joey McClure officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home.
