Obituary

Harold Rex Halsey, age 94, of Independence, VA passed away at the Grayson Health and Rehab Center in Independence.  Rex was born in the Volney community of Mouth of Wilson on Feb. 24, 1931, to Thomas Creed and Nannie Suitt Halsey.  Rex graduated from Virginia Carolina High School and joined the United States Army faithfully serving during the Korean Conflict.  He was always proud of his military service. In his younger years, Rex was a dedicated fox hunter and often recounted his many experiences while fox hunting. Following his military experience, Rex attend barber school and for the next 57 years served as a barber, spending many of those years at the Tazewell Street Barber Shop.  He made a host lasting friends and served the same customers for decades.  He continued his barber career as long as his health permitted into his 90's.  Rex grew up in the Volney Baptist Church and attended several churches throughout his life.  He enjoyed cattle farming.  Much of Rex's dedication and loyalty was dedicated to his grandson, Logan, in whom he took much pride.

In addition to his parents, Rex was preceded in death by his wife Grace Wright Halsey; brother, Rev. Camet Halsey; sister, Eva Campbell.

Rex is survived by his son Ronny and Dena Halsey of Independence; one grandson, Logan Halsey of Independence, VA; brothers, Tommy and Hazel Halsey and Rev. Doug and Jean Halsey both of Mouth of Wilson, VA; sister, Louise Adams of Piney Creek, NC; sister-in-law, Caroline Irwin of Mouth of Wilson; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, May 19, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Derek Cowan officiating.  Military Rites will be conducted at the Funeral Home following the service.  Private burial will follow in the Independence Cemetery.
