Obituary

Harry D. Smallwood, age 85, of Elk Creek, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully at his home on May 22, 2026.

Born and raised in Elk Creek, Harry spent his entire life in the community he loved. He served his country honorably in the United States Army Reserves as a combat medic for six years. Following his military service, he dedicated 37 years to the Virginia Department of Transportation, beginning his career as a heavy equipment operator and retiring as Superintendent of the Elk Creek and Baywood shops.

Harry was a quiet, strong, and hardworking man whose hands were rarely still. He was known for his ability to fix nearly anything and was always willing to help family, friends, and neighbors with whatever needed to be repaired or built. Even in his later years, he could still be found working in his shop, farming, fabricating, and taking care of the people he loved. His strong work ethic, toughness, and steady presence left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Above all else, Harry loved his family. He was a devoted husband to Mary Noblett Smallwood for 63 years and took great pride in his daughter, Holly, and grandsons who affectionately called him "Popple."  He dearly loved Tristen and Talon and treasured every opportunity to spend time with them, care for them, and support them. The example he set through hard work, loyalty, humility, and quiet strength will remain with them always.

Harry was a faithful member of Forest United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Noblett Smallwood; his daughter, Holly (Chase) Mason; grandsons, Tristen Mason and Talon Mason; sister, Wanda Bourne; nephew, Mark (fiancé Leah) Bourne; great-nephews, Luke (Jennifer) Bourne, Chance (Laken) Bourne, and Clint (Hannah) Bourne; great-nieces, Savannah (Travis) Cox and Sally (Harvey) Osborne; and several great-great nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father, Doll Smallwood; mother, Rosa Belle Sage Smallwood; and brother, Roy Smallwood.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Forest United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 194 Valleyview Road, Elk Creek, VA 24326.

A man of few words but great strength, Harry will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family and his community, his willingness to help others, and the life he built through hard work, humility, and love.
