Hazel June
Kirk Shaw
June 22, 1945 — June 22, 2025
June Kirk Shaw was born on June 22nd, 1945 in Marion, VA to Elaine Cox Kirk and William Kyle Kirk. She passed peacefully, surrounded by family, on June 22nd, 2025. June celebrated her 80th birthday in Heaven with Jesus and those dear loved ones who passed before her.
June was preceded in death by her husband, Robert 'Bob' L. Shaw III and their only child, Alison Shaw. She is survived by her mother, Elaine Cox Kirk (Independence, VA), her brother-in-law Doug Shaw (Rachel) of Independence, VA, her nephews Larry 'Butch' Shaw (Kim) of Fairfield, VA, Jared Shaw (Julie) of Baywood VA, and her niece Wendy Gunter (Travis) of Independence VA, and her aunt Lockey Kirk of Independence, VA. Additionally June is survived by 3 great-nieces, Audrey Hepler (Bailey) of Hickory, NC, MaKayla Gunter of Gray, TN, Grace Shaw of Hamburg, NY, a great-nephew who was the 'apple of her eye', Caleb Shaw of Fairfield, VA and her devoted friend and caregiver, Renee Duncan. June is also survived by numerous cousins and loving friends who will miss her deeply.
June graduated from Independence High School and attended Radford College. After marrying Bob in 1968, they moved to North Carolina where June worked for IBM in Charlotte and Winston-Salem. June and Bob eventually settled in Baywood, VA where they raised their family and built their life together. June taught school at both Fries and Baywood Elementary. She retired in 2002 after 30 years of dedicated service to the Grayson County School system. June often spoke fondly of the students she taught, and took great joy in following their lives as they grew older. June enjoyed spending time with family, was an avid reader and could often be found watching a good Western or a game show. She loved her pets and Gal, the golden lab, was her constant companion.
June and Bob were married for 49 years before his passing in 2017. Their only child, Alison Shaw, was tragically lost in a car accident in 2005. Despite the adversity she faced in her life, June never lost faith in Jesus as her Lord and Savior. June was a devoted and faithful member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she was both the pianist and the organist for many years. June often referred to herself as 'quare', but it was her delightful quirks that made her truly cherished by so many.
Services will be held on Saturday, June 28th at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Visitation will begin at 10am with the service to follow at 11am. June will be buried at the Shaw family cemetery in Baywood. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church or Baywood Volunteer Rescue Squad.
