Three minutes after 12:00 noon, on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Helen Callahan Cook was escorted from her hospital bed in Roanoke Memorial Hospital to the Gates of Heaven. At long last her wish to go home was realized. Helen was born on December 15, 1931, in the Fallville Community of Grayson County, Virginia to Boge Benton and Grace Myrtle Robinson Callahan. She has lived a faithful life obedient to the commands of her Lord and Savior and was welcomed into paradise hearing "enter in Thou good and faithful servant." Her earthly toil has ended following a 93-year sojourn. She was a remarkable person, loved and remembered by countless friends and family members. She was a loving and endearing mother who found joy in providing for her family. She will long be remembered for her Ham Dumplings, which was a favorite among her family. Her independent nature allowed her to remain in her home, living on her own terms until the end. She was mowing her own yard at 92- and could sometimes be seen upon her rooftop adjusting her antenna while in her 90's. She was known for her immaculately manicured lawn, which was a great source of pride for her. She was devoted to her beloved Atkins Memorial Church of which she was a devout and dedicated member.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Argel Callahan and one sister, Guida Poe.
She is survived by one daughter, Rita Faye Lundy (Mark) of Fries, VA; two sons, James Dale of Statesville, NC and Earl Boyd Dale (Tracy) of Fries,, VA; one brother, William Callahan (Theresa) of Galax, VA; one sister, Frances Humphreys of Baltimore, MD; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Dale, Aaron Dale (Erica), Angel Quay (Bryce), Greg Dale (Janell), Luke Dale, and Jake Dale(Victoria) seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Atkins Memorial Church with Rev. Lee Houston and Rev. Lee Thomas officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in the Forest Cemetery in Elk Creek, VA.
