James Mitchell Mundy, better known as Mitch, age 67, of a life-long resident of Independence passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehab Center in Independence.  Mitch was born on Feb. 20, 1959, in Sparta, NC to John William and Eva Cox Mundy.

His senior year, 1977, at Independence High School, year he won best mechanic for State of Virginia.  Following his graduation from Wytheville Community College in 1979, he joined his Family business, Mundy Chevrolet Sales in Independence where he took a job as mechanic later service manager, then salesman and later became an owner of Dutch Mundy Chevrolet.  Following his retirement, he sold Dutch Mundy Chevrolet, he joined Mink Auto Sales in Galax, VA and continued to work for 15 years.  He has been described as "an individual, who lived on his own terms.  He was bold and entirely unapologetic.  His, fierce magnetic energy is most likely what drew people to him. He brought that same mischievous energy to everything he did."

In his leisure time, he enjoyed riding his Harley, fishing and hunting.  He was very devoted to his nieces and nephews and enjoyed spending time with them.  He found great joy in cooking.  He enjoyed traveling and was always looking for a good time. He was a member of Jaycees of Independence and the Galax Elk's Lodge and a member of NADA Organization in Wytheville, VA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John H. Mundy, and his brother-in-law, Tommy Price.  He is survived by two sisters, Janet and Rick Tulbert of Independence, VA, Terry Price of Elk Creek, VA; sister-in-law, Yvonne Munday of Independence, VA; very special aunt, Elaine Cox Kirk of Independence, VA; Special nephew, Chad Carrico (Missi) of  Independence, VA, Zach Mundy (Kristen), of Raleigh NC; two nieces, Casey Carico of Vansant, VA, Tonja Price of Sparta, NC; special cousin, Mandy Mundy Durnovich of Independence, VA; several great-nieces and nephews also survive.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to two special nurses, Christy Lundy of Fries, VA and Mary Lynn Ward of Independence, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to the Independence Rescue Squad, Baywood Rescue Squad or Elk Creek Rescue Squad.

In respect of Mitch's wishes, the family have honored his request to grieve privately and respectfully request no food or flowers.
