Janet Ann
Delp Martin
May 11, 1944 — October 28, 2024
Fries
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Janet Ann Delp Martin, who left us on October 28, 2024 after a beautifully lived life. She passed away in the home that she had created with her husband, Donald Dean Martin, and her two daughters, Elizabeth and Leigh Anne. Full of love, laughter, and strength, she touched the lives of all who knew her. She was also a force of energy and vitality, never missing a moment to put away your shoes even before you had them off your feet or to do a dance as soon as she stepped out of the car.
Janet was born in Tennessee to her parents Ralph and Esther Delp. After Ralph's military service they soon built a farm and home in the rolling hills of Elk Creek, Virginia. Janet grew up a farm girl, milking cows on their dairy farm and active in both 4-H and agriculture in high school, but soon abandoned those in favor of a life in nursing. After graduating from the Roanoke School of Nursing she headed back to Grayson County, where she was introduced to Don. After some "fishing" and a quick courtship they were soon married. Beth arrived in 1971, and Leigh Anne followed a few years later in 1975.
Janets career in nursing led to work in the textile industry, where she supported hundreds of workers with humor and compassion, even though she might have displayed a bit too much glee while drawing their blood. Janet spent time in her garden with Don, exercised almost every day of the week, loving aerobics and sit ups especially, and was very active in her church community, as well as the Providence community in general. Later in life after Don's death, she continued their nightly ritual of driving around the beautiful back roads of Grayson County looking for deer and greeting all of the neighbors that she could find home.
Janet had lost both her loving husband and wonderful first daughter Beth, who passed away in Asheville only a month before her mother. She is survived by Leigh Anne, her husband Tom, their children Eli and Jack, as well as Beth's husband Mick and beloved dog Hugo, and their children Will, Beck, and Charlie, as well as wife and grandchildren Helen, Arthur and Wilfred.
To commemorate her incredible journey and to celebrate the love she spread, a memorial service will be held in her honor at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Fries VA on November 1, 2024 at 3pm. We invite all who knew her to join us in remembering a truly remarkable woman. The family will receive friends following the service at the fellowship hall.
