With immense sadness, the family of Janie Lynn Brown Douglas announces her passing at age 70. Janie, of Sparta, North Carolina, passed away at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital on the morning of October 10, 2026. She was born in Havre de Grace, Maryland, on July 19, 1956, to Colonel Clay Brown and Wilma Ruth Rector Brown. Janie lived a remarkable life and found her greatest joy in caring for others and putting their needs before her own. Her selflessness was one of her most defining qualities, and she will be lovingly remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. A strong woman who treasured her family relationships, Janie touched not only the lives of those closest to her but also the lives of countless others who were fortunate enough to know her. She was a devoted Christian whose life was directed and guided by her faith. A trusted confidante and keeper of secrets, Janie had the rare gift of bringing comfort to any situation with her gentle reassurance, “It will be okay, honey”. She remained greatly involved in the lives of her children and was especially cherished as a loving “Nana” to her grandchildren. Janie delighted in working alongside her husband to care for their beautifully manicured flower gardens. In later years, she also devoted much of her love and attention to her beloved canine companion, Benji, who brought her joy. Janie asked for little for herself, but a trip to the Olive Garden or a manicure and pedicure always brought a smile to her face and was among her favorite ways to celebrate a birthday. She was a pillar of strength to her family and friends. Although her passing leaves a profound emptiness, her family finds comfort in knowing that, with her final breath, she peacefully entered her heavenly home, where she was embraced by God’s everlasting love.
Janie is survived by her loving husband of 29 years, Cecil Douglas of the home; two sons, Mark (Jennifer) Sanders and Robert (Kelly) Sanders, both of Statesville, North Carolina; one daughter, Renee Sanders of Troutman, North Carolina; one stepdaughter, Amanda (Julius) Kalman of Fleetwood, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Maci, Clay, Chloe, Kiersten, and Alivia; and her beloved canine companion, Benji.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 15, at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother Ed Hall officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 p.m., followed by the service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Piney Creek Methodist Church Cemetery in Piney Creek, North Carolina.
Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, Virginia, is honored to serve the Douglas family.
