Javarius Stefon Steven Phipps, affectionately known by family and loved ones as “Burry” or “Berry,” age 33, of Independence, Virginia, passed away, leaving behind cherished memories and a host of family and friends who loved him dearly.

Javarius was preceded in death by his father, Stevie Mittman; stepfather, Roy Armstrong; grandmothers, Ella Phipps and Ethel Parnell; special aunts, Inez Davis and Renna Parsons; and special uncle, Phillip Parsons.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted mother, Lawanda Phipps, of the home; sister, Shawanna Phipps Brown (Larry) of Sparta, NC; and brother, Kevin Mittman of Galax, VA.

He is also survived by his loving nieces, Nyah Allen (Garrison) and Taylor Allen (Ethan), both of Sparta, NC; nephew, Keyshawn Phipps (Lucy) of Independence, VA; maternal aunts and uncles, Randolph Phipps (Pauline) of Independence, VA, Lucinda Brown (Duncan) of Alto, GA, Nathilla McKinney of Independence, VA, and Mickey Phipps of GA; paternal aunts, Rosemary Cox (Billy), Jennifer Bryan, Tammie Costello, and Penny Frances; and paternal uncle, Thomas Goins.

Javarius was blessed with many cherished cousins and loved ones. Among them were his special cousins, Adrian Davis(Megan) and Ikeshia Davis (Whit), both of Independence, VA, with whom he shared a lifelong sibling-like bond, and his special cousin-nephews, Josiah Davis and Jayren Davis.

He shared many special relationships throughout his life and held a deep and special love for his pastor, Bishop Charles Millner.

Javarius will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who knew and loved him. His memory and the love he shared will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and loved ones.

Rest peacefully, Javarius. You were loved, you are missed, and you will never be forgotten. It’s never goodbye, but “see you later.”

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home at 2:00 PM with Bishop Charles Millner officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow in the White Plains Cemetery.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, VA is serving the Phipps family.
