Jeanne Snow
Mcchesney
November 23, 1930 — July 7, 2023
Mrs. Jeanne Snow McChesney (November 23, 1930 - July 7, 2023), 92, passed away at The Foley Center at Chestnut Ridge, Blowing Rock, NC, on Friday, July 7, 2023. She was greatly loved and will be missed by all those who knew her well -- family and friends. Jeanne was born in Dobson, Surry County, NC. Her parents, Willie and Bertha Snow, and brothers, Clinton and Trenton, preceded her in death. Jeanne was the first in her family to attend college, and she excelled at Appalachian State University, then called Appalachian Teachers College. Upon graduation, she lived in a "teacherage" in Lewisville to begin her teaching career which lasted for 32 years. She married Frank Marshall Stokes of Walnut Cove, NC, whom she met through her uncle, A.C. Snow who became the editor of the Raleigh Times and noted newspaper columnist for the Raleigh News and Observer. Jeanne and Frank lived in Winston-Salem and had three boys, Frank, William and John Stokes. After her husband's unexpected death in 1970, Jeanne married Kenneth Howard McChesney, a decorated World War II pilot and educator. She then moved to Chapel Hill, NC, where she taught middle school and high school home economics and science until her retirement. She and Ken traveled extensively both across the United States and abroad. They loved the North Carolina mountains and built a second home on the South Fork of the New River in Ashe County eventually retiring to 1079 Nikanor Rd, West Jefferson. After Ken's death in 2001, Jeanne became even more involved in her community, serving on the local humane society and hospice boards, supporting the Ashe County Democratic Party, and was a very active member of Jefferson United Methodist Church, especially with the AA's -- Active Adults. At the young age of 80, Jeanne began another phase of her life at Ridgecrest Retirement Community in Mt. Airy where she lived for 12 years until a stroke required that she live closer to her middle son, Bill and his wife Chilton Rogers. The family greatly appreciates the staff and volunteers at The Foley Center in Blowing Rock for the care and love given to Jeanne during the 17 months she was a resident there. She is survived by two sons, Bill and John; three grandchildren, Meredith Gianotti, Marshall Stokes and Marco Varela Stokes; and two great-grandchildren along with numerous nephews and nieces. Jeanne loved her family, friends, animals, Appalachian football, and UNC-Chapel Hill basketball. She lived a full, long, and exciting life inspiring many. A memorial service will be held in her honor on Saturday, July 29th, 2023, at Jefferson United Methodist Church, 115 E. Main St., Jefferson, NC. Visitation/reception will be between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. followed by the service. Interment will be at Ashlawn Memorial Gardens.
