Jessie Mays Sutherland, 80, of Elk Creek, VA passed away Thursday, February 2, 2023, at her home.  She was born in Elk Creek, VA on June 13, 1942, to Rev. Bradley W. and Oakie Brewer Mays. She married Freddie Hays Sutherland December 23, 1961, and they resided in Elk Creek, VA where they raised their three daughters, Jennifer, Julie, and Mary Lee.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson Gannon Reed Anders, and her brother Rev. Roy Mays.  She is survived by her spouse of 61 years, Freddie Sutherland; three daughters,  Jennifer and Mike Atwood and Mary Lee and Mitch Anders, both of Wytheville, VA and Julie and Stephen Bear of Rural Retreat, VA; grandchildren and spouses, Tyler and Kristen Atwood of New Bern, NC, Jordan and Tameka Atwood of Wytheville, VA, Cassidy and Trent Shull of Knoxville, TN, Grayson and Bailey Robertson of Wytheville, VA, Tristan Boysaw of Charlotte, NC, Noah Atwood of Johnson City, TN, and his fiancée, Kathryn Perdue, Cameron Bear of Charlotte NC, and Grant Anders of Baltimore, MD; great-grandchildren, Caden and Riley Atwood of Wytheville, VA; two sisters, Evelyn Wright of Richmond, VA and Nancy Hale of Elk Creek, VA; sister in law, Doris Mays of Independence, VA.

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, February 6, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jeremy Farley, Bro. Derrick Cowan, and Brian Billings officiating. Burial will follow in the Comers Rock Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Elk Creek Fire Department or the Elk Creek Rescue Squad. Reins-Sturdivant is serving the Sutherland family.
