Obituary

John Archie Johnson was born on June 24, 1935, to the late John Henry and Ona Johnson. He peacefully transitioned from this life to eternal rest on May 9, 2025, at his home, completing 89 years and 11 months on this earth.

He was preceded in death by Henrietta Mae "Bootsie" Martin, the beloved mother of his children. John received his education at Scott Memorial in Wytheville, VA, graduating before enlisting in the United States Air Force, where he proudly served as an Airman. His service included a tour in South Korea from 1954 to 1957.

John grew up in Elk Creek, VA, before relocating to Galax, VA. It was there he met Henrietta Martin, and from their union, a son and daughter were born. Throughout his life, John was a dedicated and hardworking man. While raising his family, John began his healthcare career as an orderly at the former Waddell Hospital and later continued his service at Twin County Regional Hospital, where he worked until retirement.

John was a man of many interests and talents. He enjoyed playing golf, pool, bowling, and racing cars—earning numerous trophies in each. However, his greatest passion was found in the garage. With a remarkable talent for working on engines, John was especially known for his expertise in rebuilding and restoring cars, particularly carburetors.

At an early age, John became a member of Crossroads United Methodist Church, where he remained a member until his health declined.

He leaves to cherish his memory: one son, Robert Earl Martin of Galax, VA; one daughter, Linda Sue Martin of Galax, VA; his brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Susie Johnson of Elk Creek, VA; three grandchildren, Tinesha S. Martin, Danica (Xavier) Scott, and Alexis M. Mittman, all of Galax, VA; three great-grandchildren, Elijah Scott, Jacieon Hammond, and Anna Scott. He is also remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at 1:00 PM at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the chapel.  Burial will follow in the St. John's Cemetery in Elk Creek, VA with Military honors conducted by the Grayson County VFW Post #7726 and the United States Air Force.
