Joseph Delmer Hoosier, known as Joe, age 77 of Jefferson passed away on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2023, at the Watauga Medical Center in Boone, NC. He was born on November 19, 1945, in Ashe County to Lillard and Laura Walker Hoosier. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Arlene Ashley, Pearl Brown, and Judy Hoosier; brothers, Dale Hoosier and Darrel Hoosier.
Joe will be remembered as a much-loved member of the Jefferson community. He was a highly skilled painter, wallpaper hanger, furniture refinisher, and furniture builder. He was a successful gardener who loved to share his harvest among his friends. He loved hunting and fishing. Throughout his working years, he was employed at Leviton Manufacturing, Ashe Memorial Hospital, and Thomasville Chair Factory. He attended Bristol Baptist Church, Mt. Jefferson Baptist Church, and at the time of his passing was a member of Beaver Creek Christian Church where he served as an ordained Deacon. Joe always found great joy in doing for others and used his talents to assist his neighbors and friends in any way he could. He was always a welcomed visitor among the sick and was always willing to provide transportation to and from medical appointments. He was actively involved in ASHE REALLY CARES, the Ashe Baptist Association Food Bank, as a volunteer which he greatly enjoyed. Joe made Ashe County a better place to be and his presence will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Josephine Dollar Hoosier, one sister, Tressie and J.D. Calhoun of Jefferson; sister-in-law, Phyllis and Johnny McNeil of Lansing, NC; several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday evening, November 9, 2023, at 7:00 PM at the Bristol Baptist Church in Jefferson, NC with Pastor, Rev. Keith Wagoner, Rev. Loren Lung, and Rev. Tommy Dollar officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church from 6:00-7:00 pm. Private burial will be at the Beaver Creek Christian Church Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation Carolinas Chapter Att: Donor Services 200 SE 1st Street Suite 800 Miami, FL 33131 or the Beaver Creek Christian Church Cemetery Fund c/o Garland Lyalls 1678 Beaver Creek School Rd. West Jefferson, NC 28694. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, VA is serving the Hoosier family.
