After a brief separation of only 61 days, Kenneth Eugene Poe, age, 82 of Independence, Virginia has been reunited with his beloved wife, Dorothy Louise Poe, who preceded him in death on June 4, 2022.  Kenneth died on August 2, 2022 at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, NC.  Once retiring from the textile industry as a cutter, Kenneth took a job at the Quick Check in Independence, VA where he became a community icon.  He was a CB radio enthusiast who was known across the world as "cat farmer."  He was an avid fisherman. His daughter recalled many fishing trips with her dad and remembered when she caught the prize fish, he would say, "it's time to go home."  While he had three stepdaughters, he was never a stepdad.  Dorothy and Kenneth were married June 27, 1980, spending 41 years together.  They had a happy marriage.  Kenneth will be remembered as a hard worker and man of his word; if he said it, he did it!  This loss will be felt across the county and especially in the town of Independence.

Kenneth was born on December 4, 1939, in Galax, Virginia to Samuel Eugene and Bertie A. Cannoy Poe.  In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, C.L., John, and Kyle, and sisters, Maretha Lineberry, Pauline Jones, and Lola Isom.

He is survived by his daughters, Pam and Duane Killman of Charlotte, NC, Darlene and Toby Sells of Mouth of Wilson, VA, Charlene and Jon Brewer of Sparta, NC, and Malette and Shannon Holdaway of Mouth of Wilson, VA; two sisters, Emma and Don Weatherman of Galax, VA and Joy Sexton of Kernersville, NC; six grandchildren, Michael, Shane, Kacie and Matt, Grayson, Jenna and Lucas; three great grandchildren, Major, Carter, and Jase; also surviving is a special caregiver, Gina of Galax, Virginia.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 7, 2022, from 1:00-2:00 at the funeral home.  Graveside services will follow at 2:30 at the Comers Rock Cemetery with the Rev. David Osborne officiating.

The family will be at the home of Malette and Shannon Holdaway in Mouth of Wilson, VA.
