Margaret Josephine "Josie" Dollar Hoosier

Margaret Josephine “Josie” Dollar Hoosier, age 79, of Jefferson, North Carolina, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2026, at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Born on December 15, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Garland Alton Dollar and Margaret Shatley Dollar.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hoosier; her brother, Jack Dollar; her sisters, Kathleen Ashley, Geneva Black, and Shirley Eller; her sister-in-law, Eula Mae Dollar; and her brothers-in-law, Elden Ashley, Buster Black, and Jay Eller.

She is survived by her sister, Phyllis McNeil and husband, Johnny, of Lansing, North Carolina; nieces, Linda Black Smith (Mike), Debbie Eller Burgiss (Tim), Darlene Ashley (Jim Brooks), and Michelle McNeil VanHoy (David); nephews, Tommy Dollar (Joy), Danny Dollar (Sandy), Tony McNeil (Eve), and Kenny McNeil (Rose); several great-nieces and great-nephews; great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and a host of special friends.

Josie never met a stranger. She possessed a servant’s heart and was always willing to help anyone in need. Whether preparing meals for the sick, making adult bibs for nursing home residents, or simply offering a listening ear, caring for others brought her great joy. She also had a mischievous streak and loved making people laugh.

Family meant everything to Josie. She dearly loved her brother and sisters and treasured gathering around the table for family meals, laughter, and fellowship. Saturday nights were a favorite tradition, beginning with a home-cooked meal and ending with card games.

Josie loved entertaining and believed the more people, the merrier. She delighted in decorating her home for Christmas and welcoming everyone who came through her doors. Each Fourth of July, family and friends gathered on her front porch to watch the county fireworks. These celebrations became so well known that unexpected guests would often stop by after hearing about the fun, fellowship, and wonderful food.

She also enjoyed traveling, playing computer games, listening to music, singing, gardening, spending time with her little dog, Jody, and having her hair and nails done. Josie was well known for her sense of humor and for telling those she loved, “I wub you.” In recent years, she especially enjoyed weekly lunch outings with her dear friend, Mary Barker, and her sister, Phyllis.

She was a faithful member of Beaver Creek Christian Church, where she sang in the church choir for many years. She also enjoyed singing with the gospel group Homeward Bound in churches throughout the community.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Beaver Creek Christian Church in West Jefferson, with Rev. Tommy Dollar and Rev. Loren Lund officiating.
