It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Marilyn Estella Smith, age 72, of Independence, VA. She passed away on December 15, 2023, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, NC.
Born on May 25, 1951, Marilyn dedicated her life to spreading joy and compassion, and care to those around her.
Her hobbies and interests included cooking, collecting recipes, going to church, watching TV and attending Eastern Star meetings. She was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She found comfort in attending church, where her spirit thrived in the embrace of her community.
A retired Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) of 35 years, Marilyn dedicated her career to caring for others. Her compassion extended beyond the workplace, as she assisted sick and elderly individuals, allowing them to find comfort in the familiarity of their own home. Marilyn's selflessness and commitment to the well-being of others exemplified the true meaning of love in action.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Earl Jake Smith and Alma Clara Lee Johnson Smith, her brother, Arthur Lee Johnson, and grandmother, Alma E. Johnson. Marilyn is survived by her sister, Clara Ruth, and Troy Robertson of Victoria, VA; three nephews, Everette and Kim Johnson of West Orange, NJ, Troy Robertson II of Victoria, VA, Timothy Robertson of Pittsburgh, PA; great nephews, Everette Johnson II of West Orange, NJ, Troy Robertson lll, Orange, NJ; great nieces, Dasia Johnson, West Orange, NJ, Trameesha Robertson, Orange, NJ, Tori Robertson, Victoria, VA . She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Cassandra Johnson of East Orange, NJ, and her aunt, Elizabeth Ann Johnson of Columbus, OH; a host of cousins and dear friends also survive.
Marilyn's life was a testament to love, faith, and service. May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love she so freely gave during her time on this earth.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at 3:00 PM at Oak Grove Cemetery in Independence, VA with co-pastor Doris Phipps and Bishop Charles Milner officiating.
