Mrs. Mary Jane Smith Poole, age 88, of Independence, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2023, at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, VA. Mrs. Poole was born on July 5, 1934, in Elk Creek, VA to George and Bertha Lee Doughton Smith. In addition to her parents, Mary Jane was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Anthony Carrico and Judy Billing and one brother, Garland Owens.

Mary Jane was devout Christian and a member of Gold Hill Baptist Church for many years. She was a very special and loving mother dedicated to her children and grandchildren who were always welcome at her home.

Mrs. Poole is survived by four daughters, Bertha Jean Day of Independence, VA, Barbara Marie Sutherland and Eddie of Elk Creek, VA, Emma Lou and Ricky E. Bobbitt of Independence, VA, Carlene and J.C. Carrico of Independence, VA; three sons, Kermit and Debbie Smith of Ivanhoe, VA, Howard Smith of Lakeland, FL, Joseph Andrew and Katherine Poole of Independence, VA; ten grandchildren with one special grandson, Joseph Randolph Poole; and twelve great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 24, 2023, at 11:00 AM at the Gold Hill Baptist Church in Independence, VA with Rev. David Trent officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow in the Highland Memorial Gardens 5555 Lee Highway Dublin, VA at 2:00 PM following the funeral service.
