Michael Craig Floyd, 73 years young, passed away at his home in Fox Creek, Grayson County, VA, Sunday, January 26, 2025 of cardiac arrest after enjoying his endless pastime of cutting firewood.

He had many monikers throughout his life, Mike, Michael (spoken firmly by his sisters and lovingly by his mother), Uncle Mike, Coach Mike, Dad, and most recently, Dadu (said with glowing smiles by his grandkids). He was many things to many people, a musician, an artist, a tinkerer, a friend, a confidant, a brother, a husband, a father, a grandfather.

Michael was always there for people in need, providing enlightened support no matter what. He was fearless in being true to himself, proudly donning his tie-dyed shirts. He brought a joy and loving perspective to everyone he crossed paths with, especially kids.

He was born in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, on May 9th, 1951. Being raised in the deep south and having lost his father at a young age, Mike navigated supporting his three siblings by developing a caring heart and the ability to change directions at any moment with a radiant smile on his face.

At an early age, playing music was a place of refuge, expression, and ultimately joy for Mike. His deep love of music connected him with an amazing cast of musicians throughout his nearly 60 year career of songwriting, performance, and jam sessions. His spiraling-thumping bass lines and heartfelt lyrics will be forever remembered by those who experienced his music.

In a sometimes strained relationship with Grayson County, Coach Mike managed to have an immeasurable impact on the local youth through sports. While supporting his three kids in baseball, basketball, and volleyball, his commitment as a coach to always bring joy and a playful nature to the team became a legend of inspiration for a generation of Graysonites who carry that legacy forward today. Known for toting along his acoustic guitar and infectious laughter wherever he went, Coach Mike was beloved by his players.

Michael spent a career crafting lampshades, bringing light and beauty into the homes of so many. His artistic creations took him into nature where he observed and passionately shared nature's bounty in ways that only he could. Throughout his life, he was, in and of himself, a network of spreading the joy throughout the region to the many who counted on him.

Michael is preceded in death by his mother Clara Anne Ross, father Curtis Dalton Floyd, sister Cheryl Floyd, and survived by his loving sister Jenny Sue Caldwell, brother Patrick Floyd, wife Colette de Ribert, partner Jane Floyd, children Devin Floyd, Kendra Taylor, Aaron Floyd, stepchild Laurel Johnson, daughter-in-law Rachel Floyd, son-in-law Michael Taylor, grandchildren Norah Floyd, Eva Floyd, Benjamin Taylor, Sydney Floyd, Nina Floyd, and Jacob Taylor, and step grandchildren, Halifax Taylor, Madi Johnson, and Jack Johnson.

May he forever shake that musical leg. To quote Mike's lyrics "We were put here on this earth to gather… share the love"
