Obituary

Myrtle Young Phipps

February 27, 1943 – September 16, 2024

Myrtle was born at home in Grassy Creek, North Carolina to Lester and Jessie Handy Young. She grew up in the Grassy Creek community, graduating from Virginia-Carolina High School and Appalachian State Teachers College. She married Lewis Paul Phipps on July 31st, 1964. Their love for one another was obvious throughout their life together and set the example for their children and grandchildren.

Myrtle had a servant heart, especially regarding children. After earning a BS in Elementary Education in 1965, she taught school for 32 years, spending the majority of her career with Alleghany County Schools. She fondly recalled her students throughout the years.

Being a charter member of the Piney Creek Dirty Fingers Garden Club was a joy for Myrtle, filling her retirement life with English Teas and other events at the Meeting House in Piney Creek. Myrtle was an active member at Young's Chapel Baptist Church in Mouth of Wilson, VA for 60 years. Continuing her life of service, she was a member of the YCBC Baptist Women's Missionary Union, prepared meals for the church events, baked cookies for the church tailgate ministry team, and taught Sunday school for many years.

Although she held many titles throughout her life, her favorite was Grammy. She doted over all of her 'grands' and was their greatest cheerleader in everything they did. She also had the privilege of being Grammy to Blake Murphy, Phoebe Murphy, and Scott Kirk, caring for them throughout their early years. Grammy taught all these children the characteristics of compassion, kindness, and working together. She shared her love of reading, gardening, and cooking with each of them and any other visitor to her home. No one ever left Grammy's hungry or without a hug.

Myrtle will remain forever in our hearts and memories. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Billy Joe Young. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Lewis Paul Phipps of the home; her son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Michelle Phipps, of Piney Creek, NC; her daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Tim Mockus of Greenville, NC. Also surviving are three granddaughters: Kendra Phipps of Piney Creek, NC, Karley Pendry (Noah) of Boonville, NC, and Savannah Mockus of Denver, NC. She also leaves behind her closest friend, her "sis" Frances Young Quesenberry, and her brother, Harold Young (Rejean). Niece Cheryl Sawyers (Jerry) and nephew Jody Young also survive.

The family will receive visitors at Young's Chapel Baptist Church in Mouth of Wilson, VA beginning at 2:00pm on September 19th with the funeral service following at 3:00pm. Rev. Doug Turnmire and Rev. Chris Luper will be officiating the service for Mrs. Phipps.
