Nada LaVerne Spencer Kiser, age 87, of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, passed away November 1, 2018 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. She is survived by her husband of sixty years,
Charles March Kiser of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, two daughters, Rachel Kiser Fuller of Marion, Elizabeth Kiser Brown and husband Sherman Brown of Elk Creek, and one son, Charles William Kiser and wife Melissa of Salem, Virginia. Grandchildren include Mary Alexandra Fuller and fiancé Will Phetterplace of Newport, NC; Blake Brown of Elk Creek, Virginia ; Will Kiser of Salem; Tyler Brown and wife Stephanie of Elk Creek; and Shannon Brown and wife Naomi of Grafenwoehr, Germany. Four great-grandchildren also survive. Surviving siblings are her sister, June Ella Phipps and husband Dale Phipps of Independence, and brother Sherrill Worth Spencer also of Independence. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

LaVerne was born October 12, 1931 to John Blake Spencer and Lanta Viola Richardson Spencer on Haw Orchard Mountain. At birth, she was not expected to live, but surprised everyone by living to age eighty-seven. she attended Daniel Slabey's one room school in the Ivy Grove Church, Konnarock Training School, Marion Junior College, and Emory & Henry college. she was a teacher in the Grayson County School system off and on from the age of seventeen. During what could have been her retirement years she was employed as a receptionist at the visitor's center in Grayson Highlands State Park.

LaVerne was known for her intelligence, sharp wit, faith in God, and her love of family. She enjoyed old-time music, Cousin Zeke's dance, weenie roasts on Traw's Mountain, and playing Antney-Over with her grandchildren. Even in her final days she found a way to laugh. She will be sorely missed.

The family expresses sincere thanks to all the neighbors, care givers and extended family who provided assistance to LaVerne throughout her later years.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm in the Haw Orchard Cemetery on Saturday November 3, Paul Sturgill will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rugby Rescue Squad 1845 Rugby Road, Mouth of Wilson 24363
