Richard "Rick" Allen Sage, 71, passed away on July 7, 2026 at the Galax Rehab and Nursing center. While his passing leaves an immeasurable void, his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the memories he leaves behind.

Rick was born on June 5, 1955, in Welch, West Virginia. As the only brother with four sisters, he grew up outnumbered from day one, and they made sure he never forgot it. Because of his father's military service, Rick spent much of his childhood moving and experiencing life in different parts of the world. He learned early how to adapt, meet new people, and make a home wherever his family was stationed. He eventually graduated from Stuttgart American High School in Stuttgart, Germany, an experience that was just one part of the unique journey that shaped the man he became.

Rick spent 35 years serving the Grayson County School System, where he became known not only for his dedication but for his remarkable ability to solve problems and fix just about anything. Through his maintenance work, he helped keep schools safe, steady, and running smoothly for generations of students and staff, and as a school bus driver, he was a familiar and trusted presence in the daily lives of countless children. Even after retirement, Rick continued to serve the community he loved by spending six years as the Wilson District representative on the Grayson County School Board, leaving behind a lasting legacy of service, care, and commitment to the people of Grayson County.

To know Rick was to know someone who never met a stranger. He was the kind of man people called when something was broken, because there wasn't much he couldn't fix. A true jack of all trades, Rick was skilled in carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, mechanics, and countless other trades. If he didn't already know how to do something, he'd figure it out. He was happiest with a project in front of him and a way to help someone else.

His hands built, repaired, and restored more things than anyone could count, but his greatest work was the way he cared for those around him. Friends, neighbors, family, and even strangers knew they could depend on him. He gave his time freely, shared his knowledge without hesitation, and expected nothing in return. His kindness, work ethic, humility, and willingness to help others earned him the respect of everyone who knew him.

Rick was a man who believed that if something was worth doing, it was worth doing right. He wasn't one to seek praise or recognition; simply knowing he had helped someone was enough. His life was a testament to quiet service, steady faithfulness, and showing love through actions more than words.

Above all else, Rick loved his family. He shared 43 years of marriage with the love of his life, Artie "Becky" Sage, who preceded him in death in 2023. Their love was steadfast, enduring every season of life together. Though losing Becky left a place in his heart that could never be filled, there is comfort in knowing they are together once again.

Nothing brought Rick more pride than his children and grandchildren. Whether he was fixing something for them, offering advice, or simply enjoying time together, his love for his family was evident in everything he did. His grandchildren were one of the greatest joys of his life.

Rick will be remembered for his quiet strength, his servant's heart, and his remarkable ability to make the impossible seem possible. The things he repaired will one day wear out, but the kindness he showed, the lessons he taught, and the example he set will endure for generations. He leaves behind more than repaired homes, vehicles, and machines, he leaves behind a family who adored him, a community made better by his generosity, wisdom, and willingness to help, and a legacy that will not be forgotten.

He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

Rick is survived by his son, Richard Allen Sage Jr. His daughter Caty Verdi (Jeremy) and his beloved grandchildren, Ellie, Colson, Theo, and Parker. His sisters, Jo Monday (Junior), Nancy Richardson (Terry), Donna Sage, and Sharon Sage Walls; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Artie "Becky" Sage, and his parents James Booker and Shirley Sue Cottle Sage.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Grayson County High School Auditorium with Rev. John Hall and Kelly Wilmore officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the auditorium. Burial will follow in the Corinth Cemetery in Rugby, VA.
