Obituary

Robert Ford Smith, age 86, of Independence, VA passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at the Woltz Hospice House in Dobson, NC.  Ford was born on February 4, 1938, in Grayson County, VA to Howard and Hattie Halsey Smith.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Tammy Jean Smith and several of his brothers and sisters.  Ford will be remembered as a dedicated father, always putting his children's needs before his own.  He worked hard to provide for his family.  He was equally devoted to his extended family.  He was always loyal and supportive of all family functions and was faithful to attend every reunion and family gathering.  Once his grandchildren were born, he could always be found at his daughter's house every Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday enjoying his grandsons.  He loved bluegrass music and was an avid Ralph Stanley fan.  He was a good neighbor always willing to offer a helping hand.  He was often seen walking the roadside gathering aluminum cans.  He was a dedicated fan of "Gunsmoke."  Ford's greatest legacy is that he was a Christian and his family is greatly comforted in knowing that he has gained his eternal reward of peace and joy forever!

He is survived by his daughter, Cherie Lynn Smith of Galax, VA; three brothers, Vern and Shirley Smith of Mouth of Wilson, VA,  Joe and Joyce Smith of Galax; and Tommy and Wanda Smith of Independence, VA; two grandsons, Chance Robert and Kelsey Smith of Fries, VA and Nicholas and Da'Janie Smith of Galax, VA; three great grandchildren, Mya Smith, Maddox Smith, and Cameron Smith; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Woynal Smythers officiating.  The family will receive friends from 9:00-10:00 AM prior to the funeral at the funeral home.
