Samuel Dale "Sam" Young, of Independence, Virginia passed away at his home on Tuesday, May 3, his 84 ^th birthday. He was born to Earl and Eva Young in the Volney Community of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Juanita Adams and Jean VanHoy; and his brother, Bob Young.

Sam enjoyed being outdoors.  He enjoyed hunting and was especially fond of cutting wood and gardening.  He was a fan of baseball and an avid Atlanta Braves supporter.  For several years he was a member of the Independence Fire Department.  He was a loyal and supportive husband and a caring and loving father and grandfather.  He faithfully served in the United States Army giving three years of loyal service.  He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for several years.  He was a member of the Men's Fellowship.  When the doors of the church were opened, Sam was present offering any support he could give.  He was often found reading his Bible.  The family is greatly comforted in knowing that earth's loss is heaven's gain.

He is survived by his wife, Gussie Murray Young of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Larry Smith of Blacksburg, VA; one son, Charles Young and Lori Halsey of Independence, VA; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Jean Young of Troutdale, VA and Donald and Violet Young of Sugar Grove, VA; grandson, Ben Smith of Blacksburg, VA; granddaughter, Destiny Soles of Lincolnton, NC; two step granddaughters and four step great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at 11:00 AM at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Independence, VA with Pastor, Darrin Brannock officiating.  The body will lie in state from 10:00-11:00  at the church.  Burial will follow with military honors conducted by Grayson VFW Post 7726.
