Obituary

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Sarah Jocelyn Sharp, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt, on June 27, 2023. She passed in Piney Creek, North Carolina at her granddaughter's home, surrounded by her loving family. Jocelyn was 93 years old.

Born in Galax, Virginia on January 13, 1930, to Zollie Mae and French C. Williams, Jocelyn was a supportive, devoted daughter. After the death of her father in 1934, she grew up in the depression helping her mother to support the family. She took this role very seriously, quickly learning the values of hard work, thriftiness, and dedication to family and God.  She had a fun-loving spirit, enjoying climbing trees, laughing, and running outside. She married Lloyd Eldridge Sharp on August, 13, 1949.  They were devoted to each until his death in 1989.

Jocelyn was the treasured mother of Brenda Sharp of Galax, Virginia, proud grandmother to Mark and Elizabeth Cox of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Michelle and Craig Phipps of Piney Creek, North Carolina. She was the adored great-grandmother of Avery Cox, Kendra Phipps, Emma Cox, Brennan Cox, and Karley Phipps. She was also the devoted and adored aunt of Jack Gardner, Jill Greathouse, and Alex Gardner, Sarah and Larry Perry, and Kesha Phillips. She was preceded in death by her husband Eldridge, and siblings, Paul Madison Williams and Betty Grace Gardner.

Jocelyn lived a full life as a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt, caretaker, devoted Christian, and tireless worker. She was a dedicated employee at Roses and Penry Manufacturing Company. Jocelyn was a member of the First Christian Church in Galax, VA. She believed strongly in 'cleanliness is next to Godliness' keeping an immaculate home and surroundings. She loved baking delicious cakes, telling entertaining stories of years gone by, and caring for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her later years, Jocelyn especially enjoyed reminiscing about her favorite memories with Jenny Lineberry, her caregiver. Jocelyn was the family matriarch, shaping the lives of three generations. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

A celebration of Jocelyn's life will be held at a graveside service, officiated by Reverend Doug Turnmire, at Monte Vista Cemetery in Galax, VA on Saturday, July 1, 2023 beginning at 11am. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Young's Chapel Baptist Church - Mission Fund ℅ Dennis Gambill 2679 Oak Hill Road, Mouth of Wilson, VA 24363.
