Shirley Jean Nelson Kurtz, age 85, died on August 19, 2023 in Cuero Nursing Home and Rehab Center in Cureo, Texas.  She was born in Flat Ridge, Virginia, to Claira and Fred B. Nelson on December 26, 1937.

After college, Shirley worked for lawyers Joe and Johnny Parsons in Independence, Virginia.  After that she worked for the Government in Washington, DC.  When she was able, she enjoyed doing crafts including ceramics, making dolls, working with wool, quilting and other things.  She loved her pets: cats, dogs, rabbits, bear and deer.  She was married 52 years to her love, Ludwick Kurtz, who passed August 15, 2020.

Shirley is survived by Sisters, Betty Lukowski, Ottawa Lake, Michigan and Freda Schildroth, Merritt Island, Florida and many other relatives.

We are so thankful, after Lou passed, that Lou's Sister and Brother-in-Law, Barbara and Jerry Boehm, moved Shirley from the Nursing Home in Independence, VA, to the one in Cureo, Texas, where she would be near them and they could oversee her.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, VA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Cornett Cemetery in Elk Creek, VA.
